Juniors

During a student’s junior year, the focus on college planning gears up significantly. But don’t worry, the Guidance Office offers various programs throughout the school year to help make the process as easy as possible for both students and parents. To keep everything on track, we offer the following timeline for junior students:

First Semester Tasks

Start your online research of colleges/universities.

More importantly, take advantage of College Admission Representative visits hosted by the Guidance Office. Throughout the year, the Guidance Office will announce what college representatives will be visiting CCHS. These visits are typically held during the junior/senior lunch period. The visits serve as a great opportunity to ask questions and, in some cases, apply for admission on the spot! If interested in a particular school, students should sign up in the Guidance Office. Click here for a list of scheduled college visits and be sure to check back often as this list is updated.

Attend the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce College Fair.

CCHS will take the entire Junior class to the College Fair in early October as part of the college exploration process. The date and time will be announced through school announcements and through the school e-newsletter.

Take the PSAT in October.

All Juniors will be administered the PSAT (Preliminary to the SAT) in October. This testing helps students prepare for the SAT, which the Guidance Office strongly encourages students to take later in their junior year. Once the students receive their PSAT scores, they will be registered with My College Quick Start. My College Quick Start is a free, personalized (powered by your child’s PSAT score), on-line resource provided by College Board. For more information on this go to www.collegeboard.org/quickstart

Attend the “CCHS College Planning Night” in November.

This program is your “one-stop-shop” for college planning! Juniors should attend with their parents to get a comprehensive look at the college planning process. Invitations and meeting details will be sent directly to families as the meeting date approaches. Contact the Guidance Office if you have any questions.

Get on track for the PROMISE Scholarship.

To assist students in assessing their progress toward meeting the requirements for the PROMISE scholarship, the Guidance Office will monitor students’ core GPAs throughout their junior year.

Second Semester Tasks

Start a list of Colleges/University campuses to visit.

Listen for Guidance Office announcements or read the bi-weekly Maroon Knight News e-newsletter for information regarding College/University Open House events. Also, when you are exploring college websites during the research process, be sure to register for admissions mailings. This way you will get Open House information sent directly to your home. A great on-line resource for college searches is www.collegeboard.com.

Plan your spring testing schedule.

The Guidance Office recommends all Juniors begin taking ACT and SAT in the second semester of the academic year. Please refer to the ACT and SAT Testing Schedule for a complete listing of ACT and SAT dates and registration deadlines. You can get registration materials in the Guidance Office, or you may register online at www.actstudent.org for the ACT and www.collegeboard.com for the SAT.
